Jamie Redknapp not happy with Heung-min Son’s antics this weekend
Roy Keane and Jamie Redknapp have different perspectives on Heung-min Son’s reaction to being taken off by Ange Postecoglou after just 55 minutes.
Substitution came as a shock
Many Tottenham supporters were left shocked when Ange Postecoglou decided to bring Richarlison on for Son after just 55 minutes.
Not only were Spurs in the ascendency at the time but most of their attacks were coming through their captain, who had just delivered a world-class assist for Brennan Johnson to make it 1-1.
However, the decision worked in Tottenham’s favour in the end as the home side ran out 4-1 winners, with Richarlison picking up an assist for the all-important third goal.
Pundits speak about Son’s reaction
The South Korean star was understandably frustrated at being taken off and did not calm down once he took his seat on the bench. He was visibly annoyed at the decision and proceeded to make frustrated gestures as the game continued.
Keane played down the incident, suggesting that Postecoglou did the right thing by protecting the forward after his recent injury.
The former Man Utd man told Sky Sports (03/11/24 from 16:00) about Son: “He has just come back from injury as well. Obviously, you are thinking it’s 1-1, you are making a big call there, but it worked out well.
“The manager obviously knows the players, he trusts the players to come off the bench. Son was obviously not happy being taken off. It’s a squad game.”
However, Redknapp argued that some of the forward’s reactions were uncalled for, admitting that it made him ‘uncomfortable’.
The pundit said about Son’s reaction: “I didn’t like it, to be honest. Richarlison comes on, he comes on and makes a goal in his position. He is trying to protect him. I just thought it was a little bit uncomfortable to watch, to be honest.”
Heung-min Son is a team man
One can understand why Son was frustrated as he was on fire at the start of the second half, having got into Matty Cash’s head. However, the forward will be the first to acknowledge that he let that frustration get the better of him.
He will recognise that Postecoglou was protecting him and will be delighted with what his teammates did on the pitch in the final half hour of the game.
