My cousin’s wedding had a tacky cowboy theme but the food they served was even worse… there wasn’t any alcohol or a cake
A WEDDING guest was left shocked after being invited to a “tacky” cowboy themed wedding where each guest was served just one jacket potato for the meal.
The upset guest said their younger cousin’s big day was “so odd”, particularly as they cut both alcohol and a cake.
The guest took to Reddit to share details about the wedding, which they hailed as the “ultimate in cheap.”
They wrote: “I picked tacky for the flair but that doesn’t quite fit. But there wasn’t one for cheapness, so.
“My younger cousin got married a few years ago. Ceremony was nice. The cowboy theme wasn’t my jam, but that’s what they like so not unexpected.
“The reception was when it got odd.”
The person said they were upset when they discovered what was for the main reception meal.
They wrote: “The dinner was a baked potato bar. Just potatoes. One per guest.
“You could add chilli, cheese, sour cream, onions, and/or lettuce. That was it.
“No alcohol. No cake.
“No desserts at all except for a bowl of fun sized candy bars.”
Things got worse with who they were sat next to on the table.
They continued: “And I spent the entire time at a table with some country girls who refused to speak to me, instead whispering to each other.”
The guest shared how they are typically a fan of “cheap weddings”, and admitted their own had cost £2,000 in total, but added “you have to hit certain marks.”
They argued: “You have to feed people.
“Cut the flowers, cut the DJ, whatever – but don’t skimp on food!”
Many people were shocked at the wedding, and were quick to chime in with their views.

A second added: “Punishing folks for attending is the best way to put it. Get a sheet cake at Costco.
“If you seriously are maxed on budget, ask your parents to get the cake and soda instead of giving a gift.”
Budget-Friendly Wedding Tips
PLANNING a wedding on a budget doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your dream day. Here are some tips to keep costs down while still creating a memorable celebration:
Set a Budget and Stick to It
- Determine your total budget early on and allocate funds to different aspects of the wedding.
- Track all expenses to avoid overspending.
Limit the Guest List
- Keep your guest list intimate to reduce costs on catering, venue, and other per-person expenses.
Choose an Affordable Venue
- Consider non-traditional venues like parks, community halls, or a family member’s backyard.
- Look for venues that allow you to bring your own vendors.
DIY Decorations
- Create your own centerpieces, bouquets, and other décor items.
- Use seasonal flowers and simple, elegant designs.
Opt for a Weekday or Off-Season Wedding
- Venues and vendors often offer discounts for weekday or off-season weddings.
Simplify the Menu
- Choose a buffet or family-style meal over a plated dinner.
- Limit the number of courses and opt for affordable, yet delicious options.
Borrow or Rent Attire
- Borrow wedding attire from friends or family, or rent dresses and suits.
- Look for sales or consider pre-owned wedding dresses.
Digital Invitations
- Send digital invitations instead of printed ones to save on printing and postage costs.
Hire a DJ or Create a Playlist
- Hire a DJ instead of a live band, or create your own playlist for the reception.
Simplify the Cake
- Opt for a small, simple cake for the ceremonial cutting and serve a sheet cake to guests.
By being mindful of these tips, you can create a beautiful and memorable wedding without breaking the bank. Remember, the focus should be on celebrating your love and commitment, not on how much you spend.
A third commented: “I agree! Some additional little apps – mini chicken skewers, spring rolls, something.
“Potatoes alone is not a meal.”
However, one reasoned: “You know I wouldn’t be opposed to a baked potato bar.
“But like gimme some pulled pork to add on top. Some brisket. Sausages.
“Go along with the whole cowboy theme.”
