Five-star guard Darryn Peterson pledges to Kansas
By ADAM ZAGORIA & SAM LANCE
Class of 2025 five-star Darryn Peterson has committed to Kansas.
Ranked the No. 1 combo guard in his class, the 6-foot-5 Prolific Prep (CA) guard — nicknamed “Bucket Jones” — chose Kansas over Kansas State, Ohio State and USC.
“I will be taking my talents to the University of Kansas. Go Jayhawks,” he said on his 247 announcement.
“Expect a show next year in Lawrence. Rock Chalk, Jayhawks.”
His father, Darryl Peterson, said Kansas sees him as the “face of the program.”
Darryn added: “I feel like it aligned perfectly with my athletic and academic goals. Kansas had a strong history of development and success, which were two huge things for me during this process, finding somewhere where I could develop as a player and also have success doing it and winning.
“And coach [Bill] Self and coach KT [Kurtis Townsend], they did a great job recruiting me. They’ve been recruiting me since freshman year, so the relationship has been there and they told me how they could use me in the offense and utilize my talents, and what he sees for me and I see the same.”
Peterson is an Adidas high school NIL athlete and plays for Adidas sponsored Prolific Prep in California. The only option out of his top four that was Adidas sponsored is Kansas.
“[Adidas] chose me to make the first [high school NIL athlete] and it feels great to be a part of history, and it’s great to have a worldwide brand behind me and believing in me,” he said on his 247 announcement.
Peterson played his summer ball for Phenom United’s Adidas 3SSB program. Through 12 games, Peterson averaged 23.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He shot 49.7% from the floor and 16-of-52 (30.8%) from three.
“Darryn is a high level basketball player on both ends of the floor,” said Prolific Prep coach Ryan Bernardi. “He is the consummate point guard who can also get a basket at any time. Darryn is a great person off the floor who will impact a program in so many ways”
