Sports Briefs: San Marin’s Zhu, Redwood duo highlight MCAL tennis draw
San Marin’s Claire Zhu, undefeated in singles competition, leads the MCAL girls tennis singles tournament as the top seed of the 16-player field.
Zhu is scheduled to open the tournament Monday against Archie Williams’ Amalya Rajparia.
On the same side of the bracket is third-seeded Katie Warrin of the Branson school, who is joined in the field by teammate Mirabel Arlander, the second seed. Warrin is scheduled to open against Marin Catholic’s Christiane Zuber. Arlander is scheduled to face the Wildcats’ Ellie Damiani in Monday’s opener on the other side of the bracket.
No. 4 seed Julia Povio of Redwood drew San Rafael’s Emely DeLeon for Monday’s opener.
Redwood’s Jordan Marotto and Ella Povio earned the top seed for the doubles tournament, and are scheduled to face Terra Linda’s Jamie Schmidt and Chloe Sason in Monday’s first round. Redwood won the league team title with a victory over Branson on Thursday.
In the same side of the bracket, the fourth-seed duo from Marin Catholic, Georgia Compagno and Heidi Koch, takes on Novato’s Jaya Hugand and Claire Hannan.
The other half of the bracket features second-seed Audrey Gilmor and Paloma Vano-Rice of the Branson School taking on the Wildcats’ Payton Greco and Matalie Martin in the opening round.
Tam’s Maria-Jose Stuart and Amalie Stoker, the third seed, face Archie Williams’ Maya Evans and Siena Michelson in the first round.
The singles and doubles championships are slated for Wednesday at Novato High.
Girls cross country
Redwood High junior Sydney Middleton was first across the line Wednesday with a time of 18 minutes, 29 seconds in a three-way meet with Branson and Tam. She was followed 19 seconds later in second place by sophomore teammate Katie Kozubik. Branson’s Audrey Spaly (18:57) and Farah Allen (19;18) finished third and fourth. Senior Jane Song (19:50) led Tam in eighth place.
Redwood beat both Branson and Tam in the team scores, and Branson outscored Tam.
Boys cross country
The Tam duo of seniors Marco Zink and Caeden Gardner took the top two spots in Wednesday’s three-way meet with Redwood and Branson. Zink claimed first place in 15:59, just seven seconds ahead of Gardner. Branson senior Jasper James (16:13) finished third, ahead of Redwood senior Nicholas Kemsley (16:19).
Tam won the team scores against both Redwood and Branson, while Redwood topped Branson.
Middle school cross country
Hall Middle School’s Desmond Uriarte took first place in the 8th grade boys race during Monday’s Marin County Middle School Championships in Novato. Uriarte finished in 10 minutes, 11 seconds, just 12 seconds ahead of Sinaloa’s James Nelson in second place. Marin Country Day’s Kellan Cullerton (10;37) won the 7th grade boys race, while Hall’s Brady Crane (11:12) won the 6th grade boys race.
Mill Valley’s Kennedy Foster won the 8th grade girls race, neck-and-neck with Mark Day’s Bella Riesenfeld, in 10:49. Marin Country Day’s Sienna Trujillo (11:56) won the 7th grade girls race, while Sinaloa’s Claire Nelson (11:34) was fastest in the 6th grade girls race.
Women’s basketball
Dominican made a furious fourth-quarter comeback effort but ultimately fell, 72-67, to Gannon in its season opener at the D2 CCA Canadian Tip-Off Classic on Friday afternoon in Langley, British Columbia. Alex Salise led all players with 15 points on 60 percent shooting for the Penguins (0-1). Alaiyah San Juan had a solid line of 10 points and five rebounds, while Alyssa Alvarado finished with 11 points.
