Smash your old Halloween pumpkins at Hudson River Park
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – Get rid of your old jack-o'-lantern in a cathartic way this weekend – by smashing it with a hammer.
This Saturday, Hudson River Park will have tools like bats, hammers and shovels set up to wreck leftover pumpkins from Halloween. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. at Pier 84 near West 44th Street.
Bring your pumpkin to the park, then grab your “weapon of choice” at one of eight stations. You’ll get 15 minutes to do as much damage as you can.
It’s cathartic and also practical: the pumpkin scraps will then be turned into compost to help maintain the park’s greenery.
Year-round, locals drop compost containers off along the park every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Drop-off locations run from Pier 25 to Pier 96, where there are bins for locals to dump their smaller compost receptacles, like freezer bags or reusable containers.
Since 2018, the park has collected over 600,000 pounds of food waste.
