Runners gear up for TCS New York City Marathon: 'There's energy for 26 miles'
NEW YORK (PIX11)—As the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon approaches this Sunday, runners worldwide eagerly prepare to tackle the iconic 26.2-mile course. Tens of thousands of runners will flood the streets of New York City for the world's largest marathon.
The marathon starts at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and finishes at Central Park West Drive and 67th Street.
Among the dedicated participants is Raimundo Riojas, a Guatemalan runner competing for his 19th consecutive year.
"Health, will, sheer stubbornness," Riojas said when asked about his motivation. "This is the best race in the world and the best city in the world with the best crowd in the world. So how can you pass on it?"
For Riojas, the course is special not just for its challenge but for the people lining the streets.
"The people make the difference. The volunteers are amazing. There's energy for 26 miles, but as you get closer to the finish line, it just gets better and better," he shared.
Riojas encouraged newcomers, "If there's a will, the finish line is waiting for you. Anyone can do it. I've run it in almost three and a half hours, and I've walked it in six and a half hours, and both are just as much fun."
Safety is a top priority for the event organizers. Despite a recent incident involving a suspicious package near the finish line, which was quickly resolved, runners like Tristen Rogers feel secure.
"I ran it last year felt really safe, felt really protected and again I think the city shows up," Rogers said.
Behind the scenes, Verizon technicians are working tirelessly to ensure seamless connectivity.
Enzo Amatti, a Verizon Field Technician, noted, "For an event of this size, technology advanced over the years, and the broadband demands have gotten more intense."
For Raimundo Riojas, the marathon is a family affair. He'll be joined by his loved ones, continuing a tradition he hopes will span generations.
"I've run it with all my kids. I'm gonna run it with my wife tomorrow, and perhaps one day I'lll run it with my grandkids as well," he shared.
As the city prepares for Sunday's race, residents are reminded to be aware of road closures throughout the day.
