Trump's own polls probably show him losing: Ex-aide
Former Donald Trump aide Sarah Matthews thinks that Donald Trump's internal polling must be showing that he's losing in several major states because he's already claiming that there's cheating there.
Speaking as part of an MSNBC panel of former campaign staffers, Matthews was asked about Trump's recent interview with Tucker Carlson in which he deployed violent rhetoric about Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and attacked states he thought were cheating.
"It's hard to believe that I'm winning the election by a lot," Trump said. "Now we've got to keep the cheating down. Keep the cheating down. The only thing that can stop us is the cheating. It's the only thing that can stop us."
Matthews said that Trump's anxiety is telling.

"It seems to me that maybe their internal polling in places like Arizona and Pennsylvania isn't looking good because he's tweeted out — or posted on his TruthSocial multiple times about Pennsylvania cheating as well, even though there's obviously no evidence of that. But that doesn't matter to Donald Trump," Matthews said.
This is part of Trump laying the groundwork for a potential loss, she cautioned.
"That way, it's not his fault," she continued, "that he can say, 'Oh, look, they cheated!'"
It's the same thing seen in 2020, Matthews recalled. She was working in the White House at the time as the deputy press secretary and watched it all unfold.
"For months, he was laying the groundwork saying that it's fraudulent," she recalled. "They can't be trusted. He even encouraged his own people to not vote by mail. Obviously, that backfired on him, so now he's saying vote early, vote by mail. But now, in 2024, it's apparent to me that he's worried about a potential loss, and that's why he's already starting with these lies about the 2024 election, to cast doubt on the results."
