Keve condemns attacks on migrant delivery drivers
Cyprus’ chamber of commerce (Keve) on Friday condemned the attacks against migrant delivery drivers “whose health and safety are at risk.”
It charged the phenomenon as unacceptable, and outside of the “human-centred approach of our people towards foreign workers.”
Keve added Cyprus’ economy faces a serious problem of staff shortages and hiring foreign nationals “is absolutely necessary.”
These attacks also affect the smooth operation of catering establishments that hire this group of employees.
“If we do not rid ourselves of this phenomenon, no one will be interested in working in this profession.” As a result, scores of businesses will be affected and food deliveries may come to a halt altogether.
Keve called on the justice ministry and police to take the matter seriously and take the necessary measures. Beyond all the outlined consequences, this issue “discredits our country as xenophobic and may cause chain reactions in attracting foreign labour.”
A day earlier, Wolt welcomed a government decision to take measures, though the measures were not announced citing sensitivity issues.
Wolt said it was relieved that steps were being taken, specifying it had written to the government about this since June 2023.
