High rain chances today and tomorrow, flash flooding possible
(KLFY) -- We currently have a battle between a high pressure ridge to our east, which has been keeping us dry, and a trough of low pressure to our west, which is trying to bring in a cold front.
Unfortunately, we're right on the battle line, meaning any front that gets close will stall across the region, allowing for slow-moving thunderstorms. We'll see widespread storms today, some of which could be meandering and slow-moving. This could lead to some localized heavier rainfall and flash flooding as some isolated hot spots could see 2-4 inches of rainfall.
We are in a drought, so we can use this rainfall, but sometimes when things are abnormally dry, the ground has trouble absorbing the rain. This is more true when the rain is coming down heavily. Hopefully we can see more of a slow and steady rainfall, which the ground would more easily be able to absorb and soak up.
The front moves back north by the weekend as high pressure wins the battle. This will lead to warm temperatures and lower rain chances.
Another front may try to move close by Tuesday of next week, leading to increase rain chances on election day.
TROPICS
Long-range models show the possibility of low pressure development within the next seven days. The National Hurricane Center is giving this area a moderate chance of tropical development.
Any tropical system will move northwest into the southern Gulf, being steered by the aforementioned high pressure to its north.
We will continue to monitor this potential system through the next week.
