Urgent Warning: WFP alerts of rapidly Declining Groundwater levels in Afghanistan
The World Food Program (WFP) has announced that the declining groundwater levels in Afghanistan are posing a severe threat to the citizens.
On Thursday, October 31, the WFP shared a message on its X page, warning about the concerning drop in Afghanistan’s groundwater levels.
According to the WFP, this alarming situation reflects the harsh realities of Afghanistan’s climate crisis, as water resources continue to dwindle.
Previously, UNICEF also highlighted Afghanistan’s severe water scarcity crisis, calling for urgent action to address this escalating issue.
UNICEF warned that if preventive measures are not taken, Kabul’s groundwater could be depleted by 2030.
The organization has attributed the rapid depletion of Kabul’s groundwater to fast urbanization and climate change.
Afghanistan is recognized as one of the countries most affected by climate change, facing severe challenges in adapting to shifting environmental conditions.
Reports indicate that nearly 80% of Afghanistan’s population lacks adequate access to clean water, underscoring the urgency of the crisis.
The declining groundwater levels present a critical threat to Afghanistan’s future, as millions face the prospect of a life without sufficient water resources. Immediate intervention is needed to prevent further depletion and secure clean water access for the communities in Afghanistan.
