All quiet in Deneia, call for tougher stance towards UN
All was quiet in Deneia on Thursday, with community leader Charalambos Alexandrou calling on the state to take a tougher stance towards the UN.
This follows recent incidents with Turkish troops entering the buffer zone and preventing farmers from tending their fields.
Alexandrou said the community was awaiting to be informed by the authorities and the UN, which is in consultation with the north.
A UN vehicle is currently stationed in the buffer zone in Deneia, Alexandrou told the Cyprus News Agency.
The community leader wondered why it was necessary to enter negotiations with the north to allow farmers access to their own fields.
“I don’t know what the UN needs to negotiate with the Turks. What are they going to discuss to then tell us that we can go to our fields?” he asked.
He also pointed out that the state should take a tougher stance towards the UN, adding that the residents should not need a permit to cultivate their fields.
“We, the residents, ask for this issue not to exist. Never to be raised again. We need neither permission nor anything else to cultivate our fields. The state should be tougher with the UN,” Alexandrou said.
