Affidavit identifies suspect in southeast Austin deadly shooting
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A suspect was identified in a southeast Austin homicide that happened earlier this month, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
That suspect was identified as John Cathey III, 23, according to the affidavit.
Cathey was arrested and booked into the Travis County Jail on Tuesday on a $100,000 bond, according to online court records.
KXAN has reached out to Cathey's attorney for a statement. We will update this if one is received.
On Oct. 16, the Austin Police Department responded to the 2100 block of Burton Drive around 10:33 p.m. for a report of a man who was shot. Police later identified that man as Keshawn Cage, 20. He was pronounced dead by officials at 10:57 p.m., according to the affidavit.
An autopsy performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office determined Cage suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and the death was ruled a a homicide, according to the affidavit.
Police were able to obtain video footage from a camera that was installed by APD's Major Crimes Suppression Unit. While it did not capture the murder, it did capture events that happened "approximately 100 feet north" of where Cage's body was found, according to the affidavit.
An APD officer who is familiar with the people who "are known to frequent and commit violent crimes in the area of 2100 Burton Drive" was able to identify Cathey on the video footage as someone in the area at the time the shooting happened, court records said.
The officer spoke with a witness who said they were in the 2100 block of Burton Drive when the murder happened and said they saw Cathey shoot Cage, according to the affidavit.
