Lincoln County man saves his home during wildfire
LINCOLN COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR) - Wildfires have ravaged part of the state in recent days with evacuations being ordered in multiple areas on Tuesday, including near Wellston. The flames spread far, wide and fast with dry conditions and high winds not helping matters at all.
"The wind was going northeast and then it just switched and I mean, it was just a line of fire coming at us,” Riley Fish said.
Fish was one of many residents in the are near Highway 102 and 122nd Street south of Wellston. His home was in the path of danger.
"I got off work early, had a dentist appointment, saw some smoke, initially called 911,” Fish said.
Surveillance video from his home shows the fire quickly approaching. KFOR even caught a cat calmly watching the chaos unfold.
Fish said the family was told they needed to evacuate.
"It had jumped over here so quick, and I was getting the dogs, and my wife and kids got home and I sent them with the dogs and called everybody I could,” Fish said.
After his family left, he came back to help save anything that he could.
“Bunch of people came out here and was helping put it out,” he said.
For about four hours, they fought the flames and fortunately their house was saved.
"So thankful for that,” Fish said.
Others, however, weren’t so lucky.
"There's quite a bit of people that lived over there,” Fish said. “I think the fire actually started at the end of that neighborhood over there and jump to our side."
Riley’s house was the only one in the area that wasn’t burned up from the fire.
