From couch to ultra marathon: A father's journey of transformation and resilience
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- In January 2023, then 41-year-old Cameron Carlin made a commitment that changed his life. With a focus on family, health, and self-improvement, he began a journey that started with a simple goal: run a half marathon. A year later he is running his first ultra marathon.
A year of transformation
Throughout 2023 and 2024, Carlin pushed his limits. He lost 42 pounds, built endurance and grew stronger — both physically and mentally. It started with a mile.
"When I started this journey back in January of 2023 I could barely run a mile. When I actually ran a mile, it was like 14 minutes," Carlin said. "And then over the course of the year you just keep building mileage and it's just brick by brick."
Through consistency and dedication, he completed multiple half marathons, achieving a personal record in Austin's 3M Half Marathon with an impressive 8:45 per mile pace.
Flipping the switch
For years, Carlin had poured his energy into his career but rarely prioritized his own health. In 2023, he flipped the switch. "I put the same energy I put into my work into myself," he explains. It was a choice that not only made him healthier but also happier and more connected to his family.
"My why is really about my family and it's about being healthy, strong, active and to be able to raise four kids in this crazy chaotic world," the 42-year-old said.
The motivation to make a change wasn't just about getting fit. It was about being present and strong for his family. As a father of four—two of whom have dwarfism—he wanted to lead by example, proving to his children that strength comes from determination, not physical appearance. "I wanted to show my kids they can do anything they set their minds to," he said.
The next goal
The father of four has spent the summer and early part of the fall running more than 500 miles as part of his training for his first ultra marathon, the Austin Rattler. The event happens on Nov. 2 in Reveille Peak Ranch, which is about an hour drive west of Austin toward the Hill Country. The long distance event involves 60 miles of biking and a 50K run. Carlin has his eyes set on the long distance trail run, and he is not going to be alone -- several of his friends are joining him for the fun.
His message to the world
Carlin's story is proof that with dedication and the right mindset, anything is possible. Whether it's running a marathon or simply starting a healthier lifestyle, his journey is an inspiring reminder that we all have the power to change our lives, no matter where we start. His message is clear: "Surround yourself with positive people, challenge yourself, and don't let age define you. You are limitless."
