Cat rescue group holds Halloween donation drive
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A local non-profit has used Halloween to help rehome cats. Voice for the Voiceless has operated since 2015 and rescues cats in the Capital District and beyond by connecting them with foster families. The organization is looking for donations.
This Halloween is for more than just black cats. Voice for the Voiceless rescues cats of all colors, shapes, sizes and abilities.
“She came in recently and we're just waiting to get her fixed. She's a little bit special needs, she's got some blindness going on,” said Alicia Foster, a volunteer with the non-profit.
On the corner of Lenox and Seneca you’ll find an elaborate Halloween display at the founder Staci’s home. She encourages everyone to drop by for a free festive photo, but they also accept donations.
“Cats are so connected to the holiday, so it makes it a perfect opportunity to be a little freakish in getting so much out there,” said Foster. “We also are always looking for fosters. We never seem to have enough to support the requests that are made.”
Foster is very familiar with fostering. It’s helped her special needs child, Zach Gizzi. They fostered Phoebe and Luna before Foster found them a forever home.
“He's just as passionate now as I am and it's taught him some different necessary tools, like chores and stuff like that. But it's been wonderful,” said Foster.
She said the organization doesn’t want finances to stand in the way if you’re interested in becoming a foster family.
“We do help, if necessary, provide food and litter. If it's something that they can do on their own, that's wonderful. But we certainly don't want to put anybody in a situation that's financially binding,” said Foster. She’s passionate about finding cats a forever home.
“I know that I'm doing a good thing but also I've taught my son, and I've said it to others, it's okay to be just a chapter in their life in helping them find where they need to go from that point forward. And even if it's just for a little while, they're getting love,” said Foster.
Meow, if you’re looking for the "purrr-fect" Halloween photo, you can find them on the corner of Lenox and Seneca in Schenectady and it’ll be even spookier on Thursday, Halloween night.
Again, Voice for the Voiceless is accepting donations in the form of cat/kitten food, litter, cat toys, and monetary donations that can be cash, Venmo, or CashApp.
