Shawnee County election officials talk record turnout
TOPEKA (KSNT) - People are showing up to vote in record numbers in Shawnee County ahead of the General Election.
Shawnee County election officials told 27 news the current turnout is the most they've ever seen ahead of Election Day. People are casting votes early in the days leading up to Nov. 5 in person and through the mail.
Shawnee County voters are making their voices heard with their votes and the numbers show it. Nearly double the amount of early voters have turned up for this election as compared to previous elections in the county.
"First day was over 3,000 voters," Shawnee County Election Commissioner Andrew Howell said. "Seen a lot of days of somewhere between 2,200 and 26 [hundred] 2,700 voters. So, been very busy."
Howell said things are running smoothly despite the high early turnout of voters. Long lines aren't keeping people away either.
"We're still able to do a good job of getting people in, getting people out of here at the election office," Howell said. "Time in line here is about nill. Which I think is still pretty good considering we're seeing larger than normal numbers here."
