Parts of Batanes under Signal No. 5 due to Super Typhoon Leon
MANILA, Philippines – Signal No. 5, the highest tropical cyclone wind signal, was raised in portions of Batanes due to Super Typhoon Leon (Kong-rey) late Wednesday evening, October 30.
In a bulletin issued at 11 pm on Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said “violent conditions are being experienced” in Batanes as Leon moves closer to extreme Northern Luzon.
The super typhoon was already 140 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, as of 10 pm. It slightly slowed down, moving northwest at 15 kilometers per hour from the previous 20 km/h.
Leon still has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h and gustiness of up to 230 km/h.
PAGASA reiterated that the super typhoon might make landfall in Batanes. It is closest to the province from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning, October 31.
“This super typhoon will be near or at peak intensity during its closest point of approach to Batanes,” the weather bureau said.
After passing close to Batanes, or possibly making landfall there, Leon could make landfall in Taiwan on Thursday afternoon. Taiwan is within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
“The landfall of Leon over Taiwan will result in a continuous weakening trend for the rest of the forecast period,” added the weather bureau.
