Martha Stewart Reveals How Her Ex 'Betrayed' Her Multiple Times During Their Marriage
Martha Stewart’s 29-year marriage to Andrew Stewart was far more complicated than her fans realized. The Netflix documentary, Martha, is shedding light on the number of affairs her ex-husband reportedly had during their almost three-decade-long union.
Martha isn’t completely innocent in this situation, though. She had, what she described as a “very brief affair” with a “very attractive Irish man” during her stockbroker days in the 1960s. “It was nothing,” she claimed in the documentary. “I would never have broken up a marriage for it.” Still, Andy told the producers that he “didn’t stray” until after he became aware of Martha’s affair.
Of course, the lifestyle guru was going to have the last word, it is her documentary after all. “He was not satisfied at home,” she said. “I don’t know how many different girlfriends he had during this time, but I think there were quite a few.” That’s also when Martha gave her famous quote that’s been circulating the internet since the trailer dropped.
“Young women, listen to my advice, if you’re married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of s—,” she said dramatically. “Get out of that marriage.” The 83-year-old TV personality was most affected by Andy’s alleged fling with “the girl who was doing the flower arrangements” at their Westport, Connecticut home, Turkey Hill Farm, per Martha’s friend Kathy Tatlock.
“When I was traveling, Andy started up with her,” she said while noting the employee was living on their property at the time. “It was like I put out a snack for Andy.” It wasn’t long before she confronted the duo about their reported affair and kicked the young women off the premises. “Andy betrayed me, right on our property,” she added. “Not nice.”
Martha, who has always been a badass in business, revealed a more emotional side to herself through letters she wrote to Andy and shared with director R.J. Cutler. Her husband’s affairs cut her to the core, and it eventually led to their divorce in 1990.
“He’s the one who wanted the divorce, not I,” Martha pointed out. “He was throwing me away. I was 40 years old. I was gorgeous. You know, I was a desirous woman. But he was treating me like a castaway. He treated me really badly. And in return, I guess I treated him badly.”
Martha recently admitted to People that she and Andy have not spoken for over 20 years.
