Keira Knightley Reveals Which One of Her Controversial Parenting Choices She’s Backtracked On
Okay, so let’s go back to 2018, when Keira Knightley sat down on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to reveal that she banned her daughters from watching Disney movies. Specifically, she banned Disney princess movies such as Cinderella and The Little Mermaid for anti-feminist themes, as she put it. However, six years later, she’s backtracked on that rule, all because of COVID-19.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair Italy entitled, “Keira Knightley opens up about politics, motherhood, iconic characters, new Netflix movie,” Knightley revealed that yes, her kids have seen Disney movies, but they keep the feminist ideals she has.
“Yeah, Covid ruined all my ideas. Edie, the older one, has watched everything,” she said, also talking about how her eldest daughter Edie keeps the feminist mindset throughout the Disney princess films. “Oh yeah, she’s big on that. She’s got the feminist point. She totally did go like: ‘Why is it always the princess who gets rescued by someone?’ And I replied: ‘Because it has been written back then, and it’s completely ridiculous since you’re gonna save yourself.'”
As a parent, things change, especially when unexpected things happen, like with COVID-19, but it’s cool to see that her daughter has the same ideals as her, despite watching movies she never wanted them to see.
For those who don’t know, the Oscar-nominated star shares two children with her husband of nearly 10 years, James Righton. They first welcomed Edie in May 2015, and fast-forward to Oct 2019, they welcomed their second daughter Delilah.
In a previous interview for Vogue for her new true crime film Boston Strangler, Knightley revealed multiple rare insights into how she parents her two “fantastically strange” daughters.
“I’m not naturally a structured person, but my kids find structure really helpful. We’re quite a timetabled house, which is literally the opposite of my entire personality,” she said. “I am exactly not how I imagined myself to be as a mum. I thought I’d be a hell of a lot more hippy than I am. And I’m actually not hippy at all.”
