tSince then, it’s only been owned by four people – with the latest owner keeping hold of it for the past 25 years.
The incredibly beautiful motor features a 3-litre water-cooled, overhead cam, straight-six engine which can reach a shockingly fast top speed of 146 mph.
It’s finished in a factory-correct colour combination of ‘fire engine red’ with a gorgeous cream leather interior.
The new buyer will also receive a copy of the Merc’s factory data card, a set of historic images, matching luggage, and a full set of belly pans – a sheet of metal that covers and protects the motor’s underside.
Remarkably, the car comes with its original number-matching chassis, engine, body, gearbox, and front kingpins.
RM Sotheby’s said: “An opportunity transcending mere ownership; much like the final game-worn jersey, the last home run ball, or the final work by Picasso.
“The Last Gullwing represents the ultimate in collecting; to possess the ‘last’ of anything that defined an era is to hold a piece of history itself.
“The Last Gullwing offers a singular, storied opportunity for a collector to own the very last example of one of Mercedes-Benz’s most coveted models ever produced.”
This isn’t the only showstopping Mercedes up for sale in the coming weeks, and an incredible Mercedes-AMG ONE – a legal sports car that’s powered by a Formula One engine – is also going under the hammer.
The very special hybrid motor boasts technology derived from the brand’s incredibly successful F1 program and can be yours for an astronomical price.
There’s also a race car built by the German brand that competed in the Indy 500 on offer – having previously been owned by a Formula One legend.
The incredible motor is in pristine condition and is one of the rarest cars in the world.
To be sold later in November, it comes with an estimated price tag of £2.7 million[/caption] The car boasts a surprising top speed of 147 mph[/caption]
