Patriots’ Jerod Mayo Gives Positive Update On Drake Maye Concussion
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye remains in concussion protocol following his departure from Sunday’s victory over the New York Jets.
New England issued a rather positive update on Wednesday, however.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo revealed the 22-year-old would practice in a limited capacity Wednesday. The NFL requires players complete a five-step process before they are cleared to return to game action, and Maye appears to have already cruised through the first couple of phases.
“Drake is in the protocol,” Mayo said, per team-provided video. “He will be a limited participant in practice. He will throw the ball at times in practice, but he will be limited.”
*insert Lloyd Christmas meme here*
ESPN’s Mike Reiss shared the five-step protocol Wednesday, which includes a progression from limited activities (step one) to aerobic exercises (step two) to football-specific exercises (step three) to club-based non-contact drills (step four) to clearance by an independent doctor (step five).
Mayo did not confirm which step Maye is in. However, Mayo said Maye will not practice for more than 30 minutes, a time element which hints the QB is in phase three.
