Qatar to host fourth Doha meeting on Afghanistan
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the holding of the fourth meeting of special representatives from various countries on Afghanistan in Doha.
In a statement on Wednesday, October 30, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar said that Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations, discussed the outcomes of the third Doha meeting on Afghanistan with Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs.
The statement mentioned that both sides emphasized the need to capitalize on the positive momentum from the third Doha meeting and to utilize its outcomes in the fourth Doha meeting.
The United Nations has not yet announced the date for the fourth meeting.
The third Doha meeting, held on June 30 and July 1 of this year, included special representatives from over 25 countries and a delegation from the Taliban in Qatar.
The Taliban had described the third Doha meeting as positive and stated that the special representatives from various countries demonstrated a spirit of cooperation with Afghanistan.
At that time, the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson mentioned that the purpose of the third Doha meeting was to encourage the ruling authorities to engage with the international community through a coordinated and structured approach for the benefit of the people of Afghanistan.
However, despite these diplomatic efforts, the lack of representation of Afghan women and civil society in these talks remains a critical issue. This absence limits the inclusivity and effectiveness of discussions aimed at addressing the ongoing human rights violations in Afghanistan.
The ongoing exclusion of women and civil society representatives from these meetings raises concerns about the credibility of efforts to address women’s rights and human rights violations in Afghanistan.
To achieve meaningful progress, future talks must include diverse Afghan voices and prioritize human rights issues.
