MANILA, Philippines – So much is at stake in the 2024 United States elections, with the results undeniably impacting far beyond the borders of America.
Despite the far-reaching implications, the presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump will be decided upon by American voters, whose votes are shaped by information provided to them.
This poses a problem especially with an information ecosystem — the social media — marred with manipulation that threatens individual agency, according to a recently published study by The Nerve, a data forensics company that has worked closely with Rappler for investigative and in-depth reports.
On Thursday, October 31, Rappler senior multimedia reporter Bea Cupin sits down with Don Kevin Hapal, head of data and innovation at The Nerve, to discuss the research findings in the context of the tight race between Harris and Trump, and its implications in the global arena.
The report assessed the existing system to find out key trends in information cascades and news consumption habits, among others. Its findings also include the creation of echo chambers through social media and personalized content that heavily rely on hyper-partisan sources.
