How Mookie Betts Reacted To Obscene Interference From Fans In World Series
Mookie Betts is no stranger to the fan environment at Yankee Stadium after six seasons with the Boston Red Sox.
Game 4 of the World Series did present a frustrating play for Betts when two Yankees fans ripped at Betts’ wrists when he caught a fly ball against the wall in foul territory off the bat of Gleyber Torres in the bottom of the first inning. The umpiring crew ruled fan interference with Betts making the catch even with the aggressive actions from the two men who were escorted from their seats.
The Yankees came back from the 2-0 deficit they faced at the time. The New York bats arrived for the first time in the series in a 11-4 win over the Dodgers to avoid a sweep. Betts did not have any notable reaction to the play given the result of the game.
“It’s irrelevant,” Betts told reporters, per The Sporting Tribune’s Arash Markazi. “I didn’t even know he grabbed my wrist. It’s perfectly fine.”
Betts had a somewhat similar encounter with the Red Sox during Game 4 of the 2018 American League Championship Series. A fan closed Betts’ glove on a ball off the bat of Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve that also led to an out on fan interference.
The Dodgers look to deliver Betts’ third career championship in Game 5 on Wednesday night against the Yankees.
