Police: Check children's Halloween candy for hidden dangers
ACADIANA (KLFY) -- Trick or treating is something children look forward to every year for Halloween, but parents need to be aware of possible dangers hidden in those treats.
Lafayette police Sgt. Robin Green said over the years there have been cases where people have given tainted candy to children.
Green reminds parents to always check their child's Halloween candy.
Common cannabis edibles are known to look like regular snacks with small labeling on the wrapping. This is something children may not pay attention to, but parents should be.
"It (Halloween) is an event that was geared towards, you know, a fun time for children. Now, it has this stigma with it that it can potentially be dangerous for children," Green said.
Green said parents should be mindful of who and where their children are getting treats.
She suggests that parents check each candy wrapper and packaging. Look for signs of candy being unwrapped and rewrapped or any tears. She said if you find that, do not take any chances.
"For an adult, if we consume the edibles, we're fine. We may have some kind of a reaction like, you know, high that high feeling. But for a small child consuming these edibles, it can really harmful to their child. And if, you know, parents, we need parents to be very vigilant," she said.
