Staying safe while trick-or-treaters are on the streets
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)-- Before the little ghouls, goblins, and monsters take to the streets Thursday for Beggar's Night, there are some things drivers, parents, and the kids themselves need to keep them as safe as possible.
"Always being alert and aware of your surroundings and not being distracted specifically when we're around town when we know little ones are going to be out trick or treating," Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Ray Santiago said.
Law enforcement officers will be out in full force, ensuring drivers are slowing down and not driving distracted or under the influence. Santiago also emphasizes that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility.
"Just make sure that they're aware of some simple traffic laws: looking both ways before they cross the road, if they're able to wear some reflective parts of their costumes or pieces of equipment, or maybe have a flashlight," he said. "But everyone just needs to share the road safely."
For drivers, that means:
- Turning the radio down
- Putting your phone on 'do not disturb'
- Keeping headlights on
- Slowing down
Also, if possible, families should stick to quieter streets in residential neighborhoods where drivers are used to going slow and looking out for kids.
