Capital Region hosts eco-friendly pumpkin disposal events
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- With the spooky season wrapping up, some municipalities are offering residents a different disposal option for their jack-o-lanterns and decomposed pumpkins. Families can take various measures to dispose of their haunting creations, from composting to smashing them with a catapult.
- Bethlehem: Bethlehem will be having its third annual Pumpkin Smash at the Town Compost Facility on November 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event features cider, selfies, and pumpkin smashing.
- Rensselaer Co./City of Troy: On Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be pumpkin smashing at Knickerbacker Park. As an eco-friendly alternative to throwing pumpkins in the garbage, the city of Troy and Rensselaer County will also collect pumpkins for recycling from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for anyone unable to participate in the main event. Residents can also drop off pumpkins at the Troy DPW Garage on Friday, Nov. 1, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Schenectady Co. Recycling/Schenectady City School District Farm to School: The Third Annual Schenectady Pumpkin Smash is Sunday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Schenectady High School. Participants only need to bring pumpkins, as the event will provide smashing tools. The smashed pumpkins will be transported to a local composting facility.
- Clifton Park: The Town of Clifton Park is having four different pumpkin smashing events: November 2 and 3 at Bowman Orchards from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., November 3 at Amity Reformed Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and November 10 at St. Edward's Church from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can also drop off their pumpkins at the town Transfer Station during normal business hours.
- Grow Amsterdam NY Inc.: The Sixth Annual Amsterdam Pumpkin Smash is Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Veterans Park on Locust Avenue. The smashing will feed Tylutki Family Farm's pigs. The event includes throwing pumpkins at spiked targets, face painting, pumpkin bowling, game tables, and more.
- Adirondack Brewery: Adirondack Brewery in Lake George will host its annual pumpkin smashing on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Event Field behind the High Peaks Distilling parking lot. Beyond smashing pumpkins, there will be apple slingshots, bounce houses, bonfires, and more for families to enjoy.
