Operation Green Light set to kick off in Shawnee County
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Local officials will be decorating the Shawnee County Courthouse soon to help celebrate this year's Veterans Day in a special way.
Amanda Monhollon with the Shawnee County government said in a press release the courthouse will be lit up with green lights from Nov. 4 to Nov. 11 as part of this year's Operation Green Light. This is part of a nationwide effort to show support for military veterans.
Monhollon said this will be the third year this operation has taken place in Shawnee County. Last year, Shawnee County was one of more than 300 counties that took part in the effort.
“By illuminating the Shawnee County Courthouse in green, we’re showing our community’s appreciation for veterans and raising awareness of their unique challenges. Operation Green Light is an invitation for all of us to honor their service and highlight the local, state, and federal resources available to veterans and their families,” said Dusty Nichols, Emergency Management director and veteran.
People can join in by changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light which passersby and neighbors can see or an interior light to help start conversations about the unique challenges faced by the nation's veterans.
