Nazi costume sparks controversy at Portland State University student contest
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A Halloween costume contest at Portland State University has sparked controversy after a student showed up dressed as a Nazi, the university confirmed to KOIN 6 News on Tuesday.
The contest, which took place at Ondine Hall on Oct. 27, prompted PSU staff to send a letter to student residents stating, “the costume, actions, and words of this individual were harmful toward individuals of many different backgrounds.”
The university’s email went on to say the incident “was not in agreement with our values of respect and inclusivity in Residence Life," adding the following:
"Living in University Housing and Residence Life at PSU provides students the opportunity to interact with people from all backgrounds and experiences; it is one of the reasons we have such diverse, engaging, and unique communities for students. We strive for each resident to have the opportunity to learn and grow while experiencing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community. At the heart of this sentiment is a desire for each student to feel respected and cared for as they live in community.
If you saw or experienced this situation and felt like your home is no longer safe or respectful, we want you to know that we care about your experience and we do not tolerate hateful actions within our residential communities."
The case is being investigated by the PSU Office of Equity and Compliance’s bias team.
