Powell River Flips Script on Spruce Kings
The Powell River Kings took a 5-2 victory on Saturday night over the Prince George Spruce Kings in front of 637 fans at the Hap Parker Arena.
Tre Peck scored the lone goal of the first period as he received a pass at the side of the net after Carter Wishart had pushed to the opposite side. Niccolo Mansueto and Joel Purdom drew the assists.
The Spruce Kings tied the game in the middle frame as Lucas Veilleux grabbed his third of the weekend and fifth of the season at 6:28, as Ethan Montroy chipped the puck to space for Veilleux to chase down. Trent LeDrew drew the second assist.
Powell River went to work on a power play just minutes later as Axel Lofgren’s fourth of the year beat Wishart from the right circle on a one-time blast.
Christian Maro added his first of three on the night just 1:05 later, then scored again on the power play at 17:43 to give Powell River a 4-1 lead after two.
Mason Loewen’s first BCHL goal at 1:37 of the third period gave the Spruce Kings life as he redirected a LeDrew point shot over Elliot Pratt to get Prince George within two.
A hit on the side wall on Veilleux lead to a big scrum just a few minutes later, with the Spruce Kings losing the services of Isaac Holt, Linden Makow, and Ethan Montroy for the next 12 minutes. A lengthy delay to sort out the penalties didn’t help the Spruce Kings momentum.
A power surge hit the Hap Parker Arena and knocked out every light for about a second in the third period as well, which lead to a further delay to reset the scoreboard.
In the end, Maro finished his hat-trick by finding the empty net with 8.4 seconds remaining.
