RHP Gerrit Cole (1-0, 3.31) vs. RHP Jack Flaherty (1-2, 7.04)
The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers will begin the 120th rendition of the World Series at Dodger Stadium tonight.
To get to this point, the Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals in four games in the ALDS before eliminating the Cleveland Guardians in five during the ALCS. On the flip side, the Dodgers disposed of the San Diego Padres over five contests in the NLDS before finishing off the New York Mets in six games in the NLCS.
The two teams represent the most common matchup in Fall Classic history, having previously faced off against one another 11 times. New York has come out on top eight times, with the most recent instance coming in 1978, while Los Angeles has won thrice, including the last time they met up in 1981.
The Yankees have 27 championships and last appeared in the World Series in 2009, where they toppled the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. The Dodgers organization added its seventh ring upon beating the Tampa Bay Rays across six contests in 2020, though its last full season title dates back to 1988.
Gerrit Cole will take the mound for the Yankees on Friday as he looks to set the team off on the right foot. He’s posted a 3.31 ERA with 12 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings so far this postseason. Across his career, Cole owns a 2.98 ERA in 20 postseason outings and a 3.86 ERA through two World Series starts, both of which came with the Houston Astros in 2019.
Jack Flaherty will toe the rubber for the Dodgers looking to rebound from a poor outing against the Mets in Game 5 of the NLCS, during which he ceded eight runs over three innings. His playoff ERA sits at 7.04 on the year and 4.91 for his career.
