Evangeline Thruway rehab project expected to complete beginning of 2025
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The $21 million construction project on Evangeline Thruway is almost complete.
Deidra Druilhet, the public information officer for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, said the project started around last summer to do rehabilitation work on Evangeline Thruway.
"We had two sections that were undergoing construction. The first section was from the railroad junction on the thruway all the way to Pinhook, as well as a section further down U.S. 90 from LA 92 to LA 88," she said.
If you've driven over the surface lately, you are likely to notice a difference in the ride along that section of the roadway.
She said most of the work is being done overnight, with the exception of the weekends.
"Right now what they're doing is they're cleaning and resealing some joints along that pavement but the other big thing that they're doing right now is they are constructing a lot of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compatible handicapped ramps at the edges of those sidewalks where they meet intersections," Druihet said.
She said it is well known that the surface along Evangeline Thruway is not a smooth surface. However, until the roadway can undergo a complete rebuild as part of the Lafayette Connector Project, rehabilitation work will still need to be done to improve the rideability of the road.
The project is set for completion around the beginning of 2025.
Because the work is done at nighttime, Druilhet encourages the public to be mindful when driving in that area because of the construction crews.
“We're actually getting towards the end of this project and so we still want to make sure that we keep a safe construction environment,” she said.
