Man Utd to enter transfer race for £40m Champions League winner, could sign for free next summer - report
Manchester United must hunt for a new left-back as the position has become a persistent headache for Erik ten Hag over the past year.
Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have yet to make an appearance this campaign.
Shaw missed a staggering 38 games last season due to muscle injuries and thigh problems. He last played for United in February of this year.
Malacia missed the entire 2023/24 season because of a long-term knee injury. He faced further setbacks that have delayed his return.
The left-back spot is a pressing concern for Ten Hag but United could be close to a solution.
According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, United’s interest in Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies is becoming more concrete.
The Premier League giants are ‘gathering extensive information on Davies for several days’.
Davies is in the final year of his contract with Bayern and could leave the club as a free agent next summer.
The 23-year-old is known for his blistering pace and attacking instincts. He bagged three goals and six assists in 42 appearances last season.
Real Madrid are lurking ominously and are favourites to sign him on for free next summer.
Vincent Kompany wants Davies to stay but Bayern are not willing to meet the high salary demands of the £40 million-rated star.
The left-back has won multiple accolades with the German giants including the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and Bundesliga title (five times).
It would be a delight to see him supporting Marcus Rashford or Alejandro Garnacho on the left flank.
However, United must be wary that his attacking instincts can sometimes leave gaps at the back.
The Red Devils have already been exposed to counter-attacks this season, leaving their centre-backs to defend large spaces.
