Costco recalls salmon amid massive listeria contamination outbreak
A listeria outbreak affecting about 10million pounds of meat has expanded and caused wholesale retailer Costco to recall another product from its shelves.
Costco is recalling salmon over concerns of possible listeria contamination.
Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon sold from October 9 to 13 is under the recall that was announced in a notice to Costco members on Tuesday.
‘With an abundance of caution, Acme Smoked Fish Corp. has initiated a voluntary recall on certain packages of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes,’ stated the notice signed by the corporation’s CEO Eduardo Carbajosa.
‘We regret this unfortunate incident and have taken immediate corrective steps to ensure that this issue never happens again.’
The affected products contain the LOT number 8512801270.
Customers have been told not to consume the smoked salmon and to return it to Costco stores for a full refund.
Costco is a membership-only chain where customers seek reasonably priced items sold in bulk.
The voluntary recall comes a couple weeks after the US Department of Agriculture updated a list to recall millions of pounds of meat in frozen dinners and packaged salads. The items were sold by distributors including Trader Joe’s, Amazon Fresh, Kroger, Jenny Craig, 7-Eleven and H-E-B, among others.
Numerous brands were included in a 326-page documents with pictures of individual affected products. No consumers had reported getting sick from eating any of the items at the time.
Food-borne sickness has dominated headlines in the US recently, with a listeria outbreak affecting deli meats including Boar’s Head liverwurst in July causing widespread alarm.
More than 7.2million pounds of deli meet were recalled and the listeria outbreak killed 10 people and led to 59 hospitalizations across 19 states.
And earlier this week, McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers were linked to an E. coli outbreak with 49 cases and one death across 10 states.
Listeria can spread in facilities where food is processed. It can trigger serious symptoms particularly for pregnant and elderly people.
