Moreau cannabis farm was not licensed to operate, says town
MOREAU, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Moreau Town Supervisor Jesse Fish sent a letter to town residents on October 23 with an update on the Spier Falls Road cannabis farm. NEWS10 previously reported on this issue as some neighbors in Moreau were complaining about the strong odor.
Since the posting of that letter, the town said the growers had their cannabis licenses they held in Washington County suspended, and the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) confiscated the recently-grown crop. Here's what the Fish's letter entailed.
The letter stated that the town filed a FOIL request to OCM in September requesting the license information for the cannabis operation. That request reportedly went unanswered. On October 16, Fish said one of the owners of the cannabis operation stopped by his office.
"He informed me that a cease and desist order was in place. That order required the operation to stop, mid-harvest, which resulted in the continued cannabis smell in the area," Fish said in the letter. "Further, he acknowledged that the cannabis operation had not received authorization or licensing from OCM to operate."
On October 18, Fish said the owner called the town saying that OCM temporarily lifted the the cease and desist so they could complete their harvest. They were reportedly given until October 23 to have it done.
In a letter sent to Senator Jim Tedisco on October 18, OCM reportedly said the site "was operating without an OCM license, in violation of law and regulation." OCM then issued the cease and desist order on October 10.
"As the Town navigates this unexpected and unwelcome situation, I thank you for your continued patience," said Fish as he concluded the letter. "We are working hard to make sure Moreau residents never have to endure this again."
