Glenn Hoddle says Spurs player looked at home for the first time last night
After another successful outing in the Europa League, many of the Spurs side received praise from fans and pundits alike, but Glenn Hoddle believes one youngster really stepped up his game on the night.
Lucas Bergvall makes a breakthrough
Life at Tottenham had not quite gone to plan for Lucas Bergvall before last night’s game against AZ Alkmaar.
Radu Dragusin‘s red card against Qarabag ruined Bergvall’s full debut, with Ange Postecoglou taking the young Swedish star off after just 12 minutes. Then, his second outing against Ferencvaros was a decidedly clumsy and nervy showing from Bergvall.
But, handed another start last night, it seemed everything fell into place for Bergvall, with the teenager dictating play in the middle of the park, creating a number of good chances for his teammates, and even winning the penalty that decided the game.
He may have been replaced with what appeared to be a slight injury with 17 minutes to go, but Bergvall came away from the game smiling, and earning plaudits for his display.
Glenn Hoddle impressed by Bergvall
His performance certainly caught the eye of Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle, who told TNT Sports 1 (24/10/24 – 22:13) that the 18-year-old had finally found his feet at the club based on this display.
Hoddle said: “I thought tonight was the first time I seen him feel accomplished with the ball. His passing was excellent, especially the one for Werner in the first half with the outside of his right foot.
“He is only 18 years of age and to have the confidence to hit those passes. It was the first time I thought that he looked at home in the shirt and with the players around him, probably it helped that he had two youngsters out there on the right-hand side as well but it did look as if he stepped up a little bit from what I’ve seen so far.
“It has been a bit stop-start for him with a couple of injuries and then obviously being yanked off after the sending off [Dragusin against Qarabag]. I feel there is more to come from the kid, that is for sure.”
Bergvall can build momentum now
Hopefully, that performance is the kind of moment that helps Bergvall’s confidence grow and he can get on a good run of form hereafter. He looked delighted with himself after the game, and Postecoglou will now trust him a lot more, too.
