Mikey Moore’s stats against AZ Alkmaar undersell how incredible he was
Tottenham Hotspur’s brightest young star made quite the name for himself in the win over AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night, but his statistics from the game don’t quite match up to what everyone was seeing on the pitch.
Remember the name, Mikey Moore
Handed only his second start for Spurs for the third Europa League game, Mikey Moore was utilised on the right wing in the first half and struggled to make the desired impact.
However, after Timo Werner was replaced by Brennan Johnson at half-time, Moore switched out to the left-hand side, and immediately took the game to AZ Alkmaar.
In truth, the Dutch side simply could not handle the 17-year-old. Moore took the game by the scruff of the neck, demanding the ball, feeding his teammates in the box, and giving the Alkmaar defenders a real headache.
By the end of the game, it was apparent that Moore had been the star of the show, and that his stock had risen substantially.

However, if you were to simply analyse the game through the statistics from FotMob you would see a very different story.
Somehow, Moore was only given a match rating of 6.8 out of 10. Of the Spurs players to start the game, only Werner was handed a lower score.
Where that score is coming from, is anyone’s guess. Moore registered three shots, created one chance, and had six touches in the opposition box.
While his dribbles could have been more successful (he only completed one of four) and his crosses didn’t quite work out (again, only one out of four reached their destination), he did complete 29 of his 36 passes to achieve an 81% success rate.
Moore registered one defensive action and one recovery of the ball. However, he only won two of his eight duels on the night, one of which was an aerial duel, interestingly.
Judge by eye, not by numbers
This is an important lesson in how misleading statistics can be, and there is no substitute for simply watching a game and assessing how much of an impact a player made. Moore was electric in that second half, and the pressure he put on the Alkmaar defence was enough to keep Spurs in control of the game, and get the crowd off their feet.
