Glenn Hoddle was not happy with two Tottenham stars vs AZ Alkmaar
Tottenham Hotspur may have registered another win in the Europa League last night, but Glenn Hoddle was disappointed with one particular thing he saw from Richarlison during the game.
Richarlison’s big comeback
No game in Europe is easy, and AZ Alkmaar proved to be a resilient opponent for Spurs as the Dutch side stayed firm at the back and frustrated Ange Postecoglou‘s men at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
In the end, the two sides were separated by a penalty kick, which Richarlison coolly converted to crown a successful first start of the season.
However, the positive moment was marred slightly by the disagreement between Richarlison and the captain for the night, James Maddison, as to who would take the spot-kick.
Maddison himself won that debate and was preparing to take the penalty, but had a change of heart and handed the ball to his teammate. After the game, Maddison explained he decided it was better to give Richarlison the confidence boost.
Hoddle not impressed with Richarlison and Maddison
In his post-match analysis with TNT Sports 1 (24/10/24 – 22:22), Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle explained why he would not have been happy to see that scenario play out if he was manager.
He said: “He had a little look and then thought to himself. Only James knows what he thought about that and his injury, being out and giving him some confidence but if he [Richarlison] misses it that’s the difference.
“For me as a manager, I always had a designated penalty taker and somebody that if you’re named it before the game that was it. If they went against it, I wouldn’t be happy, even if they scored I wouldn’t be happy, to be honest.
“The fact that he scored it is great and is the difference between winning the game. That to me is a bit unprofessional, you have to designate your best man on the pitch. If that player is taken off or injured then there might be a scenario where you leave it to the players but that one only works out if you score.”
James Maddison’s decision paid off
It was a really risky decision by Maddison, and Richarlison really should not have put him in that position as it’s just asking for trouble by placing so much pressure on everyone involved. We should move past it now and make sure the designated penalty-taker is sorted in future, but hopefully, it’s done the trick for Richarlison’s confidence.
