USBWA MVP Award (and voting) Added to Basketball Reference

In modern times, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) is an organization for journalists covering college basketball. However, many decades ago writers covering the pro game were also part of the USBWA. The organization for journalists covering professional basketball is the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA). But the PBWA wasn't formed until the 1970s. It has voted for many major NBA honors since 1980-81. Before this, however, the NBA MVP was determined by a player vote. Players could not vote for teammates and, thus, it was impossible to be a unanimous MVP. However, from 1958-59 through 1965-66, the USBWA pulled double duty and, in addition to voting for collegiate honors, handed out its own NBA MVP award, which was voted on by three scribes from each NBA city.

Basketball Reference is thrilled to announce that we have added this award (and full voting tallies!) to our database. This voting provides an interesting peek at what modern award voting methods would have rewarded in some vintage NBA seasons.

Here is a year-by-year look at the award and how it compared to the voting for the official NBA award done by the players at the time:

As you can see, Bob Pettit is the winner of both awards. In the media polling, he was nearly unanimous, taking home 21 of the 24 first-place votes (3 voters from each of the NBA's 8 cities as the time). While Bill Russell was easily second in the player voting, he finished in just fourth place in the media vote, with no first place votes.

In 1959-60 the order of the top seven is identical. Wilt Chamberlain's win in the media vote is more dominant, which is no surprise since in the player vote his teammates could not vote for him.

1961-62 is one of the most intriguing MVP votes of all-time. Wilt Chamberlain averaged an all-time record 50.4 PPG and finished second in the player vote. Turns out he also finished second in the media vote. Oscar Robertson averaged a triple-double (though the term hadn't yet been invented) and finished third in the player vote. Turns out he also finished third in the media vote. Bill Russell once again won both awards. Lakers teammates Jerry West and Elgin Baylor finished 4/5 (swapping places) in both.

Oscar Robertson won his lone career MVP in 1963-64. However, if the media was voting for the award at the time, it appears it never would have happened. Robertson finished second in the USBWA voting, while Wilt Chamberlain took home the award for the first time since his rookie season in 1960, ending Bill Russell's three-season reign. 1963-64 voting totals also produced a nice laugh: Darrall Imhoff received a fifth-place MVP vote. Imhoff averaged 4.8 PPG and 4.9 RPG in 15.0 MPG for a 23-57 Pistons team. Sometimes you have to just shrug your shoulders and laugh.

After a one-year hiatus, Bill Russell was back on top, winning both awards. What is interesting is how close he was to a unanimous MVP in the media voting, where he took 23 of the 24 first-place votes.

Wilt Chamberlain took home his 3rd USBWA MVP (and 2nd NBA MVP) in 1965-66. His USBWA win was nearly unanimous, taking home 20 of the 24 first-place votes. His future teammate, Jerry West, was runner-up in both votes. Unfortunately, this was the last season in which the USBWA awarded an NBA MVP. It would have been interesting to see if Chamberlain was a unanimous MVP in 1966-67 when he led the 76ers to a 68-13 record and an NBA title.
Another interesting component of this research is seeing how it impacts the overall share of voting points that players received. Since there was no cap on the number of votes a player could receive from the USBWA and because voters ranked players 1-5 rather than 1-3, there were simply more voting points to go around. At Basketball-Reference we calculate something called MVP Award Shares, which shows how many 'shares' of MVP awards each player has won. If you're a unanimous MVP, you get 1.0 share. If you get 50% of the max vote points, you get 0.5 shares, etc. Because of the way voting worked from 1955-56 through 1979-80, this system is necessarily biased against players from pre-1980. 1980 is right around the time NBA Entertainment was formed and so history is biased against these players in other ways, as well, as far fewer highlight exist of these players. Russell (6th) and Chamberlain (7th) are the only two players whose entire careers were played before 1980 who rank in the top 20 in career MVP Award Shares (please note that Mel Daniels ranks 19th, but all of those award shares came when he was in the ABA, which is not apples to apples).

As you can see, even swapping in media voting for this limited stretch of eight seasons makes a big impact on the all-time MVP Award Shares leaderboard. Russell and Chamberlain dart into third and fourth places, respectively. Additionally, if media voting was used, Chamberlain would have won MVP in 1964, giving him five MVPs (matching Russell and Jordan), rather than four. Russell played five seasons with no USBWA voting and Chamberlain had seven such seasons, so it's possible with more seasons of data that they'd be inching on LeBron James and Michael Jordan on the MVP Award Shares leaderboard. Bob Pettit moves from 21st place to 12th place, even though his whole career isn't covered. Oscar Robertson, even though he would lose his lone MVP by moving from player voting to media voting, moves from 23rd to 16th, nonetheless. Jerry West moves from 28th to 18th. And Elgin Baylor moves from 34th place to 21st place. Again, these eight seasons of voting do not constitute all of any of these players careers, and so they'd all likely move up even further with more voting data. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar moves from 3rd place to 5th place, but since his best seasons were before 1979-80, it is likely he would move up with more data, as well.
