Washington Post: Israel’s potential targets in retaliatory strike against Iran
The Washington Post recently reported on potential Israeli retaliatory strikes against Iran, focusing on military sites that analysts believe could be targeted. The report highlights various locations that may become objectives in such an attack.
Although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed not to strike Iran’s nuclear and oil facilities at the request of President Joe Biden, Israeli officials maintain that their national interests will dictate their targets.
Michael Allen, a former National Security Council official, stated that Israel might opt for military targets instead of oil or nuclear sites. He emphasized that this strategy could disrupt Iran’s future retaliatory attacks on Israel. “Israel won’t waste a shot; their targeting will be very precise,” he noted.
Targeting Iran’s missile sites is viewed as a logical option for Israel to diminish Iran’s retaliatory capabilities. The Washington Post identified several key missile launch sites, including those in Tabriz and Imam Ali, which house underground silos.
The Tabriz missile base, also known as the Azarshahr base, has been linked to missile launches against Iraq and Israel. Reports indicate that it has been used to fire advanced missiles like the Khyber Shekan and Fateh 110.
The Imam Ali base, located near Khorramabad, has been identified as a primary storage and launch site for Shihab-3 missiles. In 2019, a significant explosion occurred there, but the Iranian government has not provided a clear explanation.
Another potential target is the naval base in Bandar Abbas, which is near the Strait of Hormuz and may represent a key naval installation for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
The Washington Post also explored the possibility of attacks on Iran’s oil infrastructure. President Biden suggested that if he were in Israel’s position, he would consider alternatives to attacking oil fields. Targeting these facilities could economically pressure the Iranian government, potentially inciting public unrest.
While Israel navigates complex geopolitical pressures, it appears poised to focus on military targets and critical infrastructure in Iran should a retaliatory strike occur. This situation continues to evolve, with significant implications for regional stability.
