U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson rallies for Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer in Oregon City
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.) just brought in a big name in the G.O.P. to help rally for her 11 days before one of the most contentious elections — in Oregon and across the U.S. — in recent memory.
Last month, Chavez-DeRemer's opponent, Janelle Bynum, was joined by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). Now it's Chavez-DeRemer's turn to flex her clout in Washington D.C. with the endorsement of U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.).
During the Oregon City rally, 150 of Chavez-DeRemer's supporters gathered at The Tumwater Ballroom to hear what she and Johnson had to say.
"I couldn't be more proud again to be your representative; I will be your representative in the 119th of Congress," Chavez-DeRemer said.
The incumbent congresswoman vying to continue representing Oregon's 5th District by winning the upcoming Nov. 5th election vowed to remain bipartisan in her role.
"You let me be your voice for two years, and I kept my promise that I would work hard, I would work across the aisle, and I would work with anybody who wants to work with me," Chavez-DeRemer said.
Chavez-DeRemer gave Johnson, whom she called her "friend," a hug when she welcomed him on stage followed by applause.
"Lori is one of the ones. They're down in the trenches, doing the hard work, bringing accountability and trying to bring common sense to the table," Johnson said.
Bynum sent the following statement to KOIN 6 News giving her reaction to Johnson's visit:
“Lori Chavez-DeRemer has tried to mislead voters on her abortion record but standing by one of the most extreme anti-abortion legislators, Mike Johnson, further confirms she is a direct threat to reproductive rights in Congress. She has been given every opportunity to represent and deliver for Oregon, but has chosen to side with MAGA extremists time and time again. Oregon’s 5th district deserves better, and I will go to Congress to protect abortion rights and stand up for all Oregonians.”
Chavez-DeRemer actually brought Bynum up during her rally.
"I want you guys to not forget her, I want you to regret her. I want you to regret the policies that she's made, not forget what she's done," Chavez-DeRemer said.
