Ange Postecoglou admits he needs to see more from Timo Werner – ‘Down in confidence’
Timo Werner was given another chance to impress in the Europa League on Thursday night, but was replaced at half-time after another poor showing, and it seems Ange Postecoglou may have seen enough.
Another dismal display from Werner
With Heung-min Son resting this week, Ange Postecoglou decided to play Timo Werner on the left wing, with Mikey Moore chosen to start on the right.
Sadly, Werner’s confidence issues continued, with the German winger spurning a number of good opportunities once more in front of goal.
The highlight of Werner’s first-half outing was a fine ball to the back post for Moore, who headed wide, but the 28-year-old did not do enough to remain on the pitch after the interval.
With Brennan Johnson introduced at half-time, Moore switched to the left side and proved to be a revelation once more, further highlighting Werner’s flaws.
Postecoglou needs more from Werner
In his post-match press conference (via Football.London), Postecoglou made no secret of his frustration with Werner’s recent run of poor form, and hinted that he needs to see some improvements soon.
He said: “It’s hard to say [why he’s struggling] but he’s definitely down in confidence, you can see that. It’s a difficult thing to get out of sometimes. All we can do is support him and get him to a place where he feels more confident.
“He played a great ball in for Mikey early. He needs to find a way out of it because for us in those positions we need players to make an impact.”
Werner’s time is coming to an end
After yet another frustrating performance, I simply cannot see how or why Postecoglou would persist in playing Werner. We’ve got Sonny, Wilson Odobert, and Mikey Moore who can all do a brilliant job out wide, and as harsh as it sounds, we don’t really benefit anything from Werner getting out of this slump anyway as he’s only on loan.
