'Kelly just said that': CNN halts Trump surrogate's effort to dismiss scandal as old news
Deployed to CNN as part of an effort by Donald Trump's campaign to try to quell the firestorm over Gen. John Kelly's comments about the former president wanting to be a dictator, Gov. Doug Burgum's main talking point was quickly shut down by an anchor.
In a recent interview, Kelly – Trump's longest-serving White House chief of staff – admitted, "Certainly the former president is in the far-right area, he’s certainly an authoritarian, admires people who are dictators — he has said that. So he certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure.”
Speaking with host Sarah Sidner, Burgum made an attempt to claim it was old news — and that was promptly correctly.

Asked about the report, Burgum stated, "This is typical at the end of an election where everybody comes out and shares their opinion. But the thing that I do know is his record and his record, say on Israel, is that no president has ever been stronger in supporting our ally Israel."
"What President Trump did for Israel was incredible, whether it's the embassy, whether it's Golan Heights, the Abraham Accords, unequivocal support for israel. And then we've got Vice President Harris, who just last week was on tape saying that Israel was committing genocide.
" "And so if you talk about what someone said about Trump five years ago about what vice president said, what she said five days ago ––."
"But John Kelly just said that now," Sidner interrupted before reminding him Kelly was Trump's longest-serving chief of staff and adding, "That was something he said two days ago."
"Yeah, talking about five years ago," the North Dakota Republican protested.
