Ange Postecoglou left bemused by FA’s decision to fine Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou reveals why he disagrees with the FA’s recent charge against Tottenham for an incident that took place in last Saturday’s London derby.
FA hit Spurs with a fine
The Mohammed Kudus red card incident has come under the spotlight once again over the last 24 hours after the FA decided to hit Tottenham with a charge.
English football’s governing body announced on Wednesday that the Spurs had been charged with “failing to ensure their players didn’t behave in an improper and or/provocative way”.
They confirmed that the Lilywhites had accepted the charge and had been fined £20,000 for the incident.
Ange Postecoglou confused by the decision
However, Posteocglou saw things differently, suggesting that his players had to protect their teammates when they saw Kudus behave in the manner they did. The Spurs head coach opined that all things considered, his players showed plenty of restraint.
When asked about the fine, Postecoglou told The Daily Mail: “I’m not really sure what we did wrong apart from, yeah, there was a coming together but a couple of our players had hit the deck by then so you would like to think we would go in there and at least protect.
“I thought our players controlled themselves but obviously the FA felt differently. I didn’t think there was anything edgy in that game at all – just a player who lost his composure for a second, Kudus.
“For the most part, I thought there was a fair bit of restraint. I guess the look of it is not great but I don’t think it was anything untoward.”
Micky van de Ven gives his take
Van de Ven, who was at the centre of the altercation, has explained that he felt Kudus kicked out at him when he was on the ground after the initial challenge, which was why he was upset with the West Ham man.
The centre-back also expressed his disagreement with the FA’s decision to hit the North London club with a fine.
The Dutchman told Sky Sports about the incident: “I had a duel with Mohammed Kudus and fell down on the ground. I had a feeling that he kicked too much through the ball and hit me like three times. I was a bit mad and stood up and pushed him.
“Then he literally punched me, he punched me in the face and I went down. I didn’t know what happened afterwards. That was the situation. If the FA say you need to get fined, it’s not how I think about it. I think it should be a different situation.”
