Ange Postecoglou claims one Tottenham star just keeps getting better and better
In just over a year, Micky van de Ven has become one of Tottenham Hotspur’s most important and impressive players, and Ange Postecoglou thinks the Dutchman can keep improving.
The flying Dutchman
Spurs desperately needed a solid defensive partner for Cristian Romero last season, and in Micky van de Ven, they certainly found just that.
He has quickly established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League thanks to his incredible athleticism, his reading of the game, and his ball-carrying ability.
But, at just 23-years-old, van de Ven still has plenty of room to develop and improve, the prospect of which has Spurs fans very excited indeed.
His phenomenal pace makes van de Ven key to helping Tottenham recover when possession is turned over, and without him, the high line Ange Postecoglou employs becomes a real issue.
Van de Ven can get better
So, just how important is van de Ven, and how much further can he take his game if he continues on his current trajectory? Postecoglou has been commenting on just that in his latest press conference (via Football.London), and suggested international football could be key for van de Ven.
He said: “With Micky, it’s fair to say he developed late but very quickly. Even at Volendam, there was a period when they were a bit unsure.
“For us last year he was outstanding in his first year in the Premier League. He’s growing all the time, maturing. I think the more he plays with the national team it will give him more belief.”
Tottenham’s most important defender
While Cristian Romero is probably the better overall player, I would say Micky van de Ven is absolutely crucial to our system at Spurs. You can see, whenever he’s not playing, we are far weaker in defence and really suffer when teams hit us on the counter-attack.
