Lafayette warrant recall extended to entire month due to death of Judge Jules Edwards
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The Lafayette City Court warrant recall scheduled for Oct. 30 has now been extended to the rest of the month of October.
The change was made due to the death of Lafayette City Judge Jules D. Edwards III, according to a joint news release from the Lafayette City Court and the Lafayette City Marshal's Office.
"In the spirit of the event, which was spearheaded by Judge Edwards, the Lafayette City Court and Lafayette City Marshal’s Office, announce that a general amnesty event will be declared for the remainder of the month of October 2024," the release read.
Edwards, who died Oct. 15, was a longtime Lafayette jurist who served the city of Lafayette from 1993 to 2024, first in the 15th Judicial District Court and then in the city court.
Anyone with an outstanding warrant with the Lafayette City Court can go to the Lafayette City Court Courthouse at 105 E. Convent St. during business hours, 8:30 a.m.– 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, to handle their outstanding warrant(s). If a person appears as instructed, provides address and contact information and signs for a new court date, their Lafayette City Court warrant will be recalled, without arrest for the warrant or necessity to post bond or contempt fines. Some matters can be handled without a further court date.
"We encourage all individuals to take advantage of this opportunity to avoid legal complications and clear their outstanding Lafayette City Court warrant(s)," the release said, "If you do not appear during this period and are later arrested on an existing warrant, amnesty will not apply."
