Trump-appointed judge who threw out classified docs case on list for major Cabinet role
The federal judge who tossed Donald Trump’s classified documents case as the Republican National Convention kicked off this summer could potentially be tapped to be the country’s next top law enforcement official, according to a report.
Aileen Cannon, who the former president nominated in 2020 as a U.S. district judge for the Southern District of Florida, was among nearly a dozen names floated around Trump’s campaign and transition operation as a possible candidate for attorney general, ABC News reported, citing sources familiar with the discussions.
The network said it reviewed a document titled “Transition Planning: Legal Principals,” which it says “lists potential staffing for the White House counsel's office, the Department of Justice, the FBI, and U.S. attorneys' offices, as well as proposed candidates for the top legal positions within multiple government agencies, should Trump be reelected.”

The document review found that Cannon’s name followed former SEC Chairman Jay Clayton, who appeared first on the list of attorney general candidates.
The judge’s pro-Trump rulings as she oversaw just one of his string of legal cases became the subject of praise for the former president, and scorn for his detractors who raised questions over the judge's potential bias, especially following the dismissal of 40 criminal charges filed by special counsel Jack Smith.
Other potential candidates being considered for the attorney general position in a possible Trump administration, according to ABC News, include Jeffrey Clark, Mike Davis and former White House lawyer Mark Paoletta.
