A FOOD expert has revealed a simple storage hack you can use to make bananas last up to 26 days.
Bananas are one of the nation’s most beloved fruits and thousands are consumed every day in smoothies, cakes, or as a mid-morning snack.
However, they are prone to going brown and mushy, meaning that they often end up going to waste.
In order to make them last a bit longer, you can try a variety of different tricks, including putting clingfilm on the stalks, and storing them in the fridge.
But TikToker Amy Cross’ (@amycrosslegacy) hack promises to make the fruit last for a whopping 26 days.
Amy’s unique banana storage method involves her cutting them into pieces, with the peel still on, and then storing them in a glass jar in the fridge.
In a social media video, she explained that her goal was to see if the bananas would last for 12 hours, but after 26 days, the banana was still fresh.
Amy got the inspiration for her hack, after realising that other fruits such as strawberries and apples last longer when they’re in a jar.
She added that this hack is perfect for if you only want to eat half a banana, and save the rest for another day.
For those who don’t fancy chopping their bananas up Linda Taylor, founder of Gracious Vegan revealed that a simple way to make them last longer, is to store them in the fridge.
Most of us have been taught not to put our bananas in the fridge, as this will make the peel turn black.
However, Linda revealed that although the peel turns black, the fruit inside will still be yellow and the ethylene gas production will slow down, so the bananas will stay fresher for longer.
She said: “If you have a banana that’s just past the green stage, maybe with a few brown spots, refrigeration will do two things to it.
“The skin will turn brown, and I mean brown [and] further softening of the banana will be delayed.
“This is a great way to prevent the bananas from getting very soft.
“If you can bring yourself to peeling that brown skin in the week following, you’ll find the banana inside to be firmer than its brothers and sisters left at room temperature, and its taste will be just fine.”
Using this method, Linda said that you can make bananas last for up to two weeks.
However, she warned against keeping green bananas in the fridge as this will stop them from ripening.
Linda advised keeping green bananas away from other fruit, and placing them in the cupboard on the kitchen counter, before transferring them to the fridge once they’re yellow.
