I had demons at 31 and thought ‘I’m next’ – Robbie Williams opens up about his torment in emotive tribute to Liam Payne

ROBBIE Williams has opened up about his own torment in an emotive tribute to the late Liam Payne.

The former Take That singer said he is overcome with “shock, sadness and confusion” – and revealed fears from his youth he would be “next” following the 31-year-old’s death on Wednesday.

Liam tragically fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina – where he was holidaying after reuniting with 1D pal Niall Horan days earlier.

Niall, also 31, shared his own heartbreaking tribute to his “amazing friend” earlier today.

Robbie, 50, had first met the band while they were on the X Factor in 2010.

He told his followers to “be kind” in a post on Instagram today.

He wrote: “How to make sense of the Liam Payne tragedy?

“Obviously, my first feelings towards his passing were like everyone else.

“Shock, sadness and confusion. And to be honest as I write these words that’s where I still am.”

“I met the boys on The X Factor and ‘mentored’ them.

“I use the word mentored in inverted brackets cos I hardly did anything to be honest.

“I just hung out with them. They were all cheeky and lovely. I enjoyed the light hearted p*** takery and thought about all the times I was that cheeky p***taker with the Popstars that had gone before me when I was in Take That.

“Our paths have crossed ever since that day and I’m fond of them all.

“Liam’s trials and tribulations were very similar to mine, so it made sense to reach out and offer what I could. So I did.

“I guess in these moments it’s worth repeating –

“WE DON’T KNOW WHATS GOING ON IN PEOPLE’S LIVES.
WHAT PAIN THEY’RE GOING THROUGH AND WHAT MAKES THEM BEHAVE IN THE WAY THAT THEY BEHAVE.

“BEFORE WE REACH TO JUDGEMENT, A BIT OF SLACK NEEDS TO BE GIVEN.”

Robbie continued: “BEFORE YOU TYPE ANYTHING ON THE INTERNET, HAVE A THINK ‘DO I REALLY NEED TO PUBLISH THIS?’, BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE DOING.

“YOU’RE PUBLISHING YOUR THOUGHTS FOR ANYBODY TO READ. EVEN IF YOU DON’T REALLY THINK THAT CELEBRITIES OR THEIR FAMILIES EXIST. THEY FUCKING DO. SKIN AND BONE AND IMMENSELY SENSITIVE.

“I still had my demons at 31. I relapsed. I was in pain. I was in pain because I relapsed.

“I relapsed because of a multitude of painful reasons. I remember Heath Ledger passing and thinking ‘I’m next’.

“By the grace of god and/or dumb luck I’m still here.

“The internet will unfortunately carry on being the internet. The media will unfortunately carry on being the media and fame will carry on being fame.

“As individuals though we have the power to change ourselves. We can be kinder.

“We can be more empathetic. We can at least try to be more compassionate towards ourselves, our family, our friends, strangers in life and strangers on the internet.

“Even famous strangers need your compassion.

“What a Handsome Talented boy. What a tragic painful loss for his friends, family, fans and by the looks of the energy this moment has created – The World.”

Fellow former ID stars Harry Styles, 30, Louis Tomlinson, 32, and Zayn Malik, 31, also expressed their grief in equally heartbreaking posts.

Harry shared a picture of dad-of-one Liam alongside a heartfelt statement that said his “greatest joy was making other people happy”.

Louis, meanwhile, said he was “beyond devastated” after losing his “brother”.

“Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul,” he said, adding that the tragic star was the “most vital part” of One Direction.

Zayn shared a photo him and Liam embracing in the back of a car during their early band days.

He said he “can’t help but think selfishly that there was so many more conversations for us to have in our lives”.

The singer, who left the band first in 2016 – months before the remaining members decided to go on an indefinite hiatus – said they often “butted heads” but he had a profound respect for Liam.

DISTURBING BEHAVIOUR

A woman also staying at the CasaSur Hotel in the Palermo area of the Argentine capital where Liam died on Wednesday afternoon, said he displayed “disturbing” behaviour shortly before the tragedy.

She said Liam told her: “I used to be in a boy band – that’s why I’m so f**ked up.”

The 28-year-old said she has been left “shaken” by what happened, having seen Liam just moments before he died.

She told the Mail how “there was something a bit desperate” about Liam’s behaviour.

She encountered Liam in the foyer of the hotel on Wednesday afternoon and took photos of him at 4.26pm local time (8.26pm UK time).

She claims he became “upset” by an email on his screen and shouted “f**k this s**t mate” before smashing the laptop on the ground.

A 911 call from hotel staff later that afternoon revealed they needed “urgent assistance” from cops to help with a guest “behaving erratically”.

Liam was found dead in the hotel’s inner courtyard at just after 5pm local time (9pm UK time).

His death was confirmed as soon as ambulance crews arrived.

Cops discovered “what appeared to be narcotics, alcohol, destroyed objects and furniture” in his room.

Photos published by Argentine media showed white powder, burnt aluminium foil and a smashed TV screen inside his suite.

Forensic teams reported that a whiskey bottle, lighter and mobile phone were retrieved from the building’s internal courtyard where Liam’s body was found.

But cops are yet to confirm what the substances found in the room are and are due to run tests on them shortly.

The singer had been open about his battles with addiction in the past.

Officials have said “everything indicates” that he was alone when he died and could have been partly or fully unconscious when he fell.

A full toxicology report is still pending and could take weeks to become public.
