Spurs made approach to hire official, but he is heading to Man City now
Manchester City’s newest recruit was the subject of serious interest from Spurs in the past. It appears the Eithad was more convincing a destination than the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Man City make major appointment
It has been confirmed that Txiki Begiristain is set to end his 15-year spell as Man City’s director of football at the end of the current season.
The Premier League champions are set to replace the Spaniard with Hugo Viana, who is currently serving in the same role at Sporting Lisbon.
Viana is highly thought of in the game and it has now emerged that he was also on the radar of other Premier League sides – including Spurs.
Tottenham made an approach for Hugo Viana
According to Mais Futbol, City are not the only Premier League club to show interest in Viana, who was allegedly the subject of an approach by Tottenham.
In fact, the outlet says that the Portuguese director was ‘in the sights of Spurs first’, suggesting that the Lilywhites made an approach for the 42-year-old before even Man City.
Sport Witness relays this information and adds that Viana was also on the radar of Aston Villa in the past.
When did Spurs make an approach for Viana?
The report sheds no light on when Tottenham actually expressed an interest in Viana but it would be fair to assume that they did so when they were on the lookout for Fabio Paratici’s replacement.
We will never know whether Johan Lange was the North London club’s first choice or whether they decided to appoint the Dane after being turned down by other candidates.
